Apart from its extensive work in the Kashmir division, the Alamdar Peace and Welfare Foundation (APWF) has been running physical rehabilitation programs in the Jammu division, specifically in the border districts of Rajouri and Poonch. These districts, located near the international border with Pakistan, face unique challenges due to their geography, socio-economic conditions, and exposure to conflict-related situations.
Rajouri district, in particular, has one of the highest populations of persons with disabilities in Jammu and Kashmir. Recognizing the urgent need for rehabilitation services, APWF launched its programs in the district with a focus on ensuring that people with disabilities are not left behind. A baseline survey was conducted by APWF’s field team to identify individuals in need of care. Additionally, official data from the Social Welfare Department was used to create a comprehensive beneficiary list to provide free treatment and services to as many people as possible.
APWF’s team in Rajouri includes qualified therapists specializing in physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech and hearing therapy, and pain management. The goal is not just to provide treatment but to support complete reintegration of persons with disabilities into the community, enabling them to lead productive, independent, and dignified lives.
The core components of APWF’s rehabilitation programs in Rajouri include:
Physiotherapy to restore movement and alleviate pain
Occupational therapy to promote independence in daily tasks
Speech therapy to enhance communication abilities
Psycho-social counseling to address emotional and mental health challenges
Training on daily living activities to increase self-reliance
Distribution of mobility aids to support physical access
Awareness campaigns on disability rights and available government schemes
These interventions are designed not just to treat disability but to empower individuals and mainstream their participation in society.
Over the past four years, with generous support from the HCL Foundation, APWF has made significant progress in Rajouri:
1,050 beneficiaries have been registered and are receiving ongoing services
502 aids and appliances have been distributed, including 79 prosthetic and orthotic devices
Of these, 25 prostheses and 54 orthoses have been fitted
500 caregivers have received training to provide effective home-based care
20 homes have been modified for better accessibility
1,859 individuals have been reached through disability awareness camps
137 ASHA and Anganwadi workers have been trained to support early identification and community outreach
Through its continuum of care, APWF continues to transform lives in Rajouri—building community resilience, fostering social inclusion, and ensuring that persons with disabilities are equipped to live full and meaningful lives.
